Head Housekeeper Job Description
Housekeeper required for boarding school in Cheltenham (25 hours per week) The Housekeeper is responsible to the Assistant Bursar (Estates) for the management of the domestic staff and budgets and for the good state of cleanliness of the School and a high standard of maintenance of soft furnishings.Close liaison with the Resources Manager is required, particularly keeping him informed of maintenance requirements and safety issues.Main Responsibilities i) Recruitment, management and close and active monitoring of all domestic staff. In conjunction with the Assistant Bursar (Estates) taking necessary action to resolve disciplinary or capability mattersii) Frequent inspection of all areas within the Senior, Preparatory and Pre-preparatory Schoolsiii) Supervision of the School’s in-house laundry serviceiv) Ordering, issue and control of stores and equipment. Managing the budget for materials and ensuring that equipment is correctly maintained by Estates staff or contractors as appropriatev) Maintenance of attendance registers and authorisation of timesheets. Preparation of monthly timesheet summary for payroll purposesvi) Monitoring soft furnishings, carpets and curtains and agreeing replacements with the Resources Managervii) Ensuring Health and Safety legislation is applied. Preparation of risk assessments for Housekeeping tasks and management of COSHH.viii) By agreement, occasional supervision of work during holiday periodsix) Liaison with Boarding House Matrons and with senior teaching staffHours of WorkThe normal working week will average 25 hours during term-time and for about one week before and after each term. It is expected that the Housekeeper will use some of those hours for supervision of those staff who work non-standard shifts. One week’s attendance spread over several days by agreement in the School holidays to monitor works and lets.The Housekeeper should also usually be contactable during the School holidays in case of emergency or payroll queries.It is expected that occasional attendance for special events may be required, and time off in lieu will be given.Bank holidays which fall during term-time are normal working days.SalaryThe salary will be in the range of £13,000 to £14,000, reviewable annually in September.This post is subject to a satisfactory medical report, clearance from the Criminal Records Bureau and agreement of contract.
